Without a doubt, our well-stocked bar cart has become the COVID MVP. Inspired to get a little more crafty and creative than we might otherwise, we've found ourselves digging into new recipes to change up the regular negroni/boulevardier routine. As a follow up to our first cocktail blog post, The Gentleman's Guide to Classic Cocktails with a Twist, here are four drinks our team is loving in quarantine.
NEW YORK SOUR
- 2oz Kinsip Wild Oak Whiskey, or your preferred variety
- 1.5oz fresh lemon juice
- 1oz simple syrup
- 1oz Louis Latour Pinot Noir, or red wine of your choice
Combine whiskey, lemon juice and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker with lots of ice. Shake heavily, until shaker becomes frosty and ice has mostly dissipated. Strain into a rocks glass over ice, preferably one 2" cube. Top up slowly with red wine. Garnish with lemon twist.

According to the team at Harry Rosen: you could think of this tequila-based take on the Aviation as a way of flying down to Mexico, without leaving the house. It’s also the best use of a maraschino cherry known to man. Said so well, it would be a crime not to quote. Original recipe available on the HR blog here.
- 1.5oz white 100%-agave tequila
- 0.5oz maraschino liqueur
- 0.5oz fresh lime juice
- Bourbon or maraschino cherries - we love these from Jack Rudy, available at the Cocktail Emporium
Combine tequila, maraschino liqueur and lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with cherry of choice, stalk removed.

SPICY MEZCAL MARGARITA
You could say that mezcal is a bit like tequila's more sophisticated older cousin. Deep and smoky in flavour, this is our founder's favourite spirit for tequila-based cocktails.
- 2oz Los Siete Misterios Mezcal
- 1oz Cointreau or Triple Sec
- 1oz fresh lime juice
- Jalapeno + salt
Muddle a small piece (1") of jalapeño in the bottom of a cocktail shaker -- adjust based on desired spice level. Add mezcal, Cointreau and lime juice, top shaker with ice and shake heavily. Rim old fashioned glass with kosher or sea salt (plus red chili flakes if desired). Strain into a rocks glass over ice -- again, our preference is always the oversized ice cube. Garnish with slice of jalapeño and lime.
GIN BASIL SMASH
Borrowed from Mr. Porter's Cocktail Hour series with at-home barman Richard Lee Massey, this cocktail is herbaceous, fresh and perfect for a sunny afternoon on the porch.
- 2oz Dry Gin
- 1oz fresh lemon juice
- 0.5oz simple syrup
- Fresh basil leaves
Muddle a handful of basil leaves in your cocktail shaker. Add gin, lemon juice and simple syrup with lots of ice and shake. Strain into an old fashioned glass over ice. Garnish with a few basil leaves.
